Arques la Bataille by John Henry Twachtman

Oil on canvas, 60 x 78 7/8 inches, 1885

I love the soft haziness, the muted similar colors, and the simplicity of the above painting by Twachtman. The foreground reeds are suggested beautifully. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes this painting as "reminiscent of both Japanese prints and Whistler's nocturnes." I would like to feature both on here in the future. Below is a smaller oil study done by Twachtman the previous year:
