Restoration of The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius

The Goldfinch (restored), Oil on panel, 13 x 9 inches
Mauritshuis Museum, The Hague

The above painting is by Carel Fabritius, a Dutch painter and student of Rembrandt. When I began looking for this image online, I was surprised to find that the painting was so different than I remembered. The earlier image was much more yellow as you can see in the example below and on the full version on Wikipedia.

Detail of The Goldfinch before and after restoration

The Mauritshuis Museum in the Netherlands restored the painting in 2003. The varnish greatly discolored over time, hiding the intended color of the wall. You can read more details about the restoration of The Goldfinch on the Mauritshuis Museum website.
