The Shepherdess by Jean-François Millet

Pastel and black conté crayon on gray paper
27 1/16 x 36 3/4 inches, 1870–1874

Like Millet's other work, this strong pastel drawing depicts a scene of peasant life. The piece is a variation after his earlier painting, Shepherdess with her Flock. You can see the original painting and read a description of the work on the Musée d'Orsay website.
